new news

Wow, the news is new again. The Taliban are retreating from one stronghold after another to make way for the various regional factions whom they have suppressed for the past 5 years. From Patrick Brown's report this evening on CBC Radio One, it sounds like loosely organized mayhem over there; everyone's driving around like maniacs, yelling in the streets, and acting crazy. It must feel good for everybody to let off some steam after all this stuff.

It would seem that the next step would be to figure out what kind of provisional government to put in place of the Taliban while Afghanis as a whole negotiate a more permanent form of government for themselves. In reviewing their options and the various (and divergent) pressures being placed upon them by several foreign nations (but not the UN), it would also seem that perhaps the country could be roughly divided into semi-autonomous region states that would convene nationally for high-level, strategic planning and interaction. Based on what I've heard about Afghanistan's long-standing, war-ridden past, I wouldn't expect that a single government will ever truly be able to unify the entire nation. It's also clear that foreign interference will not be tolerated by Afghanis over the long term; as could be expected in situations like this, it is probably only a home-grown solution that will prove successful.

Lots of humanitarian stuff to take care of, too. Food drops have decreased to one-quarter of their early November levels, and it's unclear how many survivors there are from the last month's bombing and where they're all located. Yeah, that's right - the last month's bombing - didn't the US just start their bombing campaign on Canadian Thanksgiving, around October 7th or so? It's remarkable how quickly they've unilaterally toppled an entrenched, military-style regime in a country that size. Their bombs must be really big.

In other news, Microsoft still hasn't replied to my letter from yesterday. Don't they appreciate getting little messages like that? Their business must be really big.
