I've been very active on KaZaA for the past few days while waiting to get over my sickness from last week. I took advantage of the down time to clean up my MP3 directories and catalogue some stuff.

While I was doing that, I considered how valuable I'd find it to use an MP3 trading service that used totally clean and up-to-date databases. When I'm looking for music, I'm generally looking in certain categories or genres and my search would be greatly aided if I could search a comprehensive database according to an agreed-upon convention. Imagine if you could be sure that you were getting the best-quality and most complete, non-truncated, well-catalogued MP3s available. Without any spelling mistakes in the titles. With good CBBD references so that you could purchase the CD if you wanted to. You know the drill.

I've heard of partnerships between record companies and certain startups that must take this into consideration. It's certainly a service I would pay money for. Kazaa works great right now, but the data could sure be a lot cleaner. Re security, perhaps some kind of portable, web-based software key could help to ensure that only updated members could play the transferred MP3s. Again, I'd pay for that service. I'd find it valuable.
