A good Canadian author, Anne-Marie MacDonald, appeared on Oprah last week to discuss her book, Fall On Your Knees. (B is about 75% finished that book right now, so she taped the show to watch after she's finished reading it.) This will be one of the last regular installments of Oprah's Book Club for a little while; she says that she's having trouble finding enough books and authors that she feels compelled to share.

Her book club was a monthly feature, so I don't wonder much at her decision. I'm sure it would be hard to find new authors and books at that pace. I wonder if she would find it worthwhile to assemble and survey the authors who have contributed to her book club so far. There must be several dozen of them, so it could be a formidable source of ideas or commentary. I don't think that's really her bag, but I'd love to see it done.

Anyway, her change of schedule reminds me of the fact that a lot of things in life are probably progressing faster than they need to in general. There appears to be this constant striving for greater efficiency and growth in our lives; I notice an almost constant awareness of it throughout each day, myself. I wonder what it is that makes us value growth and movement and expansion so much. Constant striving for betterment. What's wrong with how we are right now? I think I'm doing fine. I just am. There's no way to "be" wrong. If you just are, you are.

And so on.
