On one of those Andrew Cohen tapes my mom sent me, he talks a lot about what it means to be enlightened; about how to live enlightenedly, as it were. He said that there are two common approaches, and then the correct one. One way (in his opinion, a decidedly unenlightened way) is to view the world purely in its relative sense, in its dualistic sense, and to believe that everything you can see, touch, hear, smell, etc. is the sum total and extent of the world. Another way is to accept only the Absolute, and to negate everything that is seen in the relative, physical world as unreal. The third way, he says, is more of a middle path, one where you're constantly aware of and in touch with the Absolute at the same time as you're living in the physical world and engaging actively with it. He made it sound like some kind of balancing act, where you're always sticking one foot on either side of the Absolute divide or something.
You know, ultimately, he's just another guy just like any other, and his description of This is just made up of words like any other. In the end, it doesn't much matter what is ever said or done. The lines that mark the borders between all events and circumstances do genuinely start to blur after awhile. That doesn't matter either, but it's somehwat worthy of note. I act and move and speak only in accordance with the whim and circumstance of the present moment; there is nobody here to guide me in any one direction over another. Everything unfolds as it should, and there is total peace in how this occurs. How could it be any other way?
