I was just sitting in meditation in the study with a candle burning along with some incense, doing my japa for the purash charana I started a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to keep up with my pre-ordained schedule each day, so tonight, since B and Z went to bed quite early, I thought I'd take the opportunity to get in a few extra malas in an attempt to catch up.

I'd completed two malas when I heard Z starting to fuss in the bedroom next door -- she was cuddling with her mom, but I guess she wasn't in the mood to go to sleep yet. By the time I'd finished another mala, B had had enough and brought her out to the nursery to put her down in her crib. I heard the bedroom door close after that and Z started to cry a little, so I knew that B had left her in her crib and gone back to bed herself. "Not a bad tactic," I thought to myself, since Z has been getting better at putting herself to sleep in that manner lately.

But by the time I finished my third mala, Z was still crying intermittently, so I got up to get her and try to put her to sleep myself. She wasn't in the mood, though -- she wanted to play. So I brought her back to the study and sat down with her on my cushion in front of the candle and the incense. She was happy enough to sit quietly for about a half-mala before she started to squirm, and after finishing that mala, I put the beads down and started to play with her. We were having fun, and she was enjoying watching the candle, but the weird end to the meditation session really came a few minutes later, when I had her perched on my shoulders playing the drums on my head.

She stopped smacking my head for a moment, and I heard a quiet gurgle followed by a soft splashing sound. My nearly-bald, freshly shaved head felt warm and wet. "Shit," I thought. "She just threw up on my head!" I quickly set her down on the floor and reached for some kleenex. She let out a long, loud howl as soon as I did that, and then started crying really hard. Man, it was funny. I didn't quite catch it all before it dripped down onto my left ear and shoulder.

She fell asleep shortly after that.
