Did a very lame gig last night for an independent film production that paid no money. It was supposed to be over at 10:30 PM, but our portion actually finished at 3:30 AM this morning. It wasn't a total loss though, because the bass player and drummer and I had some good nuts-and-bolts discussions about the new band that we'd like to start.

The gist of the group is that we're playing modern improvisatory music using themes taken from dance music, hip-hop, electronica, jungle, dub, and just plain funky, bassy music with sophisticated grooves and melodies that connect. Our audience could range from young adults who are looking for funky music you could dance to but that's more well thought out, to open-minded jazz fans who would like to hear how modern pop music can be used as a platform for good improvisation.

It should go without saying that the music we play will be totally live. At some point in the future, it might be possible to incorporate a DJ as an additional member of the group, but we're starting with the fundamental structure of bass, drums, electric guitar, and tenor saxophone. The guitar player may do vocals on the occasional tune, but the orchestration of the melodies will be multifaceted and not focused on the saxophone, for example (most commonly done in traditional jazz combos with a horn player in the lead).

So does anyone have any ideas for a name for this group? We have a few original compositions, but we'll also be covering a number of tunes by bands like Radiohead, Portishead, maybe Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright, as well as some stuff like middle Stevie Wonder, plus Curtis Mayfield and even Led Zeppelin. All with a funky jazz sometimes-swingin always-rockin groove.

Don't forget: you can dance to it if you want to. It would be best if you all did, actually. Each set would be a continuous program with a certain progression to it in mood and content. We'd want you all to be on the floor with us, experiencing the grooves and getting into the jam right there with us on the stage.
