I feel for the families of the astronauts, surely. What an awful surprise to watch the orbiter come apart in the sky like that, so soon before landing. One nice thing is that I heard an astronaut describe what the ride would have been like up to that point, and he said that it would have been beautiful. The thermal shield creates these gorgeous red streaks and blazes that the astronauts would certainly have been enjoying upon their re-entry. Their death would have occurred extremely quickly, in the midst of that experience.

I also can't help thinking that the irony of this moment is enormous. Bush called for the entire country to unite in their grief for seven people, yet he will probably start to kill thousands of innocent civilians within a few short weeks. It would be nice to take a pause for thought, George.
