Jul. 20th, 2002 07:24 amA buddhist student was travelling to see his master. He carried with him an umbrella and a small box, not valuable but precious because it was a gift to him from his mother, also some food and a few coins.
Along the way he was set upon by robbers who took it all, including his clothes.
When he arrived at his master's house the student explained what had happened adding that he had "practiced lovingkindness in my heart as I was beaten and robbed."
The master said, "Hmmmm, you would have done better to have lovingly beaten them about the head and shoulders with your umbrella and kept your stuff."
