Interesting buzz about the US election on CBC Radio One this morning. Heard a commentator remark that Kerry clearly outperformed Bush in the debates, but that a lot of people find George Bush a more pleasant man to be around. They like his easy demeanour and his story-telling style, and if asked to choose whom they'd rather invite for dinner, they'd probably say George Bush.

I hope that a minority of American voters use that as their main criterion for their choice of candidate. Cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills would also be important attributes for the President of the United States. The ability to understand complex concepts at many levels; appreciation of the nuance required to understand different people and to resolve conflict with them. All sorts of things, really. Qualities you might like in someone who was representing you to the world and also managing all of your domestic affairs.

One might then consider who would be a more reasonable candidate to vote for. And the choice would be obvious.

Mickey Mouse for President. If only he hadn't lost that primary to John Kerry.
