A local friend of mine recently suffered the unbelievably tragic loss Tuesday of her unborn son, whom she named Cohen Anthony. The poor boy was due to be born in only two weeks, but died quickly and unexpectedly as a result of complications arising just before an early labour and childbirth.

I was dumbstruck by the news today. Being a parent of young children myself, I find it painful even to imagine the sorrow and grief the parents must be feeling right now. To go into early labour and then to give birth to your stillborn son must be simply the worst possible feeling you could ever have in life. I am untellably sorrowful for their loss, and for the pain that their young family and four-year-old daughter must be feeling right now.

Kelly has always loved the named Cohen and is also a lifelong Leonard Cohen fan, and when Jorin and I named our third child Cohen, it gave her the idea that she could do the same. Prior to that, she'd never considered it a plausible first name for a baby. I just found out today that she had named this dear boy Cohen, and of course that made my tears flow even more freely.

I am so sorry and saddened for her loss. I wish our Cohen could have met and played with her Cohen.

His notice for tomorrow's paper follows:
